Altamont, California, is a small unincorporated community located in Alameda County. It is situated at the eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area and is about 15 miles east of Oakland.
Altamont is perhaps best known for its association with the infamous Altamont Speedway Free Festival in 1969, which was intended to be a West Coast equivalent of the Woodstock festival. The event, however, became marred by violence and chaos, including the stabbing death of a concertgoer by a member of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang.
Today, Altamont is a quiet community with a population of around 1,500 people. The area is known for its scenic vistas, including views of nearby Mount Diablo and the Altamont Pass, which is home to numerous wind turbines used to generate clean energy. The community is also surrounded by several natural parks and recreational areas, including the Vasco Caves Regional Preserve and the Brushy Peak Regional Preserve.
